Jacksonville, NC’s Hooligan’s Pub and Music Hall played host to a killer rock show last night when Enemy in Disguise, Surrender the Fall, Otherwise, and headliners Nonpoint stopped by. These bands were veterans to this venue and clearly felt themselves at home judging by their stage presence.
Starting off the night, Enemy in Disguise, a local-NC band from Raleigh, took the stage full throttle and got the crowd riled up for the rest of the show. Their set consisted of original songs as well as covers including “The Bad Touch” by Bloodhound Gang and samplings of Ludacris’s “Move Bitch.” Surrender the Fall was up next and the crowd erupted with cheers. It was clear that these guys have made a solid fan base for themselves in Eastern NC. The Memphis, TN natives played a number of songs from their debut album Burn in the Spotlight, including the single “Some Kind of Perfect.” By the time they left the stage the audience was left cheering and waiting for the next band to come on and continue their night of rock.
After a short set change, Vegas boys Otherwise took the stage. This was my second time seeing these guys, the first time being at Carolina Rebellion. They didn’t disappoint then and they certainly didn’t disappoint now. They came out jumping and rocking out to their album opener “Die For You,” and continued playing songs off True Love Never Dies including “Lighthouse,” “Vegas Girl,” “I Don’t Apologize,” and their newest single, “Full Circle.” The stage was probably a little too small for their energy, but they definitely managed, taking advantage by standing on amps, jumping on to the rails, and even going down into the pit for a little bit. The audience was feeding off the energy from the guys throughout the set and by the time the band closed with “Soldiers” it was almost uncontainable. Jacksonville, NC is a military town, so “Soldiers” definitely hit a chord with the people here. A fan posted on Otherwise’s Facebook page and told them about their friend who had died earlier this week. He said that “Soldiers” was one of his favorite songs and asked the guys to dedicate the song to him when they played it last night. Adrian Patrick took a second before the start of the song to dedicate it to the Marine’s late friend, demonstrating that they are truly a band who loves and cares about their fans.
After the incredible set from Otherwise, headliners Nonpoint finally took the stage. A majority of the crowd were sporting Nonpoint T-shirt’s so it didn’t surprise me when there was a deafening roar as the guys walked out. These guys kept the energy up and played songs from their entire collection including “Broken Bones,” “Alive and Kicking,” their cover of “In the Air Tonight,” and many more. They encouraged audience participation throughout the entire set and even enforced the “Nonpoint rule.” If you want to know what the Nonpoint rule is, you’re going to have to go see them and check it out for yourselves! They took a second to thank everyone for coming out and recognize all of the bands that were before them. Singer Elias Soriano even took a second to address the guys from Otherwise and asked them if they would want to do a tour together. He seemed pretty sincere with that question so if you guys see a tour with Nonpoint and Otherwise around the beginning of November, don’t be surprised (and you heard it here first!). The band closed out their set with “Bullet with a Name,” and left everyone wanting more.
If you have yet to see any of these bands live, I suggest that you change that as soon as possible. They’ll put on one of the most energetic rock shows you’ve ever seen and will definitely be worth your time.
