New York City's Irving Plaza welcomed Buckcherry last night alongside up and coming bands Heaven's Basement and Mindset Evolution and NYC locals Mother.
Irving was still filling up when Mother played their first ever show at the venue. It took a few songs for the audience to realize that these guys weren't a typical local opener whose set is spent at the bar. They put on a great performance and seemed to have converted the entire audience to fans by the end of their set.
Next up was Mindset Evolution, winner of Uproar Festival's Battle of the Bands in 2011. It didn't take long to figure out how they won such a huge competition when they started playing. The band kept on going despite sound issues, with singer Rob Ulrich holding onto two mics as if nothing had happened. The energy from drummer Joey Gibbs was incredible, especially on the band's first single, "Burn It Down," that was released last Tuesday.
We've seen a lot of Heaven's Basement lately at all the major festivals including Carolina Rebellion and Rock on the Range. It was an entirely different experience to see them in a smaller, more intimate setting. The Englishmen ran through songs from their latest release Filthy Empire, including guitar-driven "Heartbreaking Son of a Bitch" and their anthemic single "Fire, Fire." Their relentless energy had everyone warmed up to party with Buckcherry.
The party started with Buckcherry as they played through hit after hit. "Lit Up" and "All Night Long" had everyone dancing, and edgier tracks like "Nothing Left But Tears" and "Rescue Me" showcased their talent. Singer Josh Todd's danced around the stage all night and got the crowd moving on "Porno Star." For anyone that had seen Buckcherry more than once, it was great to see new songs included in the setlist. A nice rundown of the seven deadly sins as Buckcherry shared their Confessions with us on tracks like "Wrath" and "Gluttony" was an awesome new addition to their live show.
No Buckcherry show would be complete without slowing things down for a bit with "Sorry" and of course, playing "Crazy Bitch." Lighters and cellphones were in the air and voices could be heard singing along to the rock ballad. "Crazy Bitch" closed up the first part of the band's set. The song is always a favorite at a Buckcherry show, and it certainly showed in the terrible dance moves from the audience as they rocked out and sang along.
