Boston’s native sons, the Dropkick Murphys returned home on Friday night for what was perhaps the biggest show of their career. For a group of guys who grew up in the City of Boston, idolizing the Boston Bruins, playing at the team’s home arena was a dream come true for the entire band. From the opening notes of the show the Dropkicks showed off a set that encompassed their entire career.
Opening with two songs, “The Boys Are Back” and “Burn”, off of their latest release the Murphys showed their seasoned selves. They played songs from their classic albums “The Warrior’s Code” and “The Meanest of Times” that were the familiar to even the most casual Dropkick Murphys fan, such as the monster hit “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”. They even delved into their hardcore punk roots with songs like “Barroom Hero” and “Citizen C.I.A.” that made the show inside the cavernous TD Garden feel like the world’s largest basement show. They even played to their true Irish roots with covers of traditional Irish folk songs like “The Wild Rover” and “Fields of Athenry” and nodding to their rock roots by closing the night with an AC/DC cover of “T.N.T.”.
The crowd inside the TD Garden fully embraced all eras of the band, shouting along and moshing to everything the band threw out there. Fans of all ages were among the nearly 10,000 in attendance for the homecoming of their hometown heroes. The Murphys even brought out young Irish step dancers to give the night an even more Irish feel.
The night wasn’t all fun and games however as TD Garden’s security officials did their best to rain on the Murphys parade. Beginning with unsuccessful attempts to stop fans from moshing, and continuing as they ejected fans from the venue who were crowd surfing. Murphys frontman Ken Casey voiced his displeasure with them and apologized to the Dropkick fans on behalf of the band. Garden security acted like Gestapo throughout the entire night, almost like they were holding a contest to see how many fans they could eject and how many individual’s evenings they could ruin.
Despite valiant efforts by the Garden to put a damper on things, the Dropkick Murphys homecoming show was an overall success. The fans who did get to stay for the entire show thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the Dropkicks sounded spot on all night. While it seems the Dropkick Murphys won’t be interested in hosting their St. Patrick’s Day festivities at the Garden again next year, they were incredible happy to have crossed the arena off their list of Boston venues. For a city that loves a band as much as Boston loves their Dropkick Murphys the night was a special treat and a night to remember for all who were there.
