Papa Roach and Stone Sour Back and Better than Ever

Stone Sour, Papa Roach, and Otherwise brought their US tour to New York City last night to a packed full Terminal 5. The sardine can atmosphere added to the show, creating an awesome vibe for all ready to mosh and get lost in the music.

Terminal 5 was already full by the time opener Otherwise took the stage for a short set of songs off of their debut album “True Love Never Dies”. The Las Vegas five piece have seen enormous success over the past few months, appearing on some of the biggest rock tours in the country, including 3 Doors Down and Daughtry, My Darkest Days, and more. With each performance their fan base evidently grows larger, with more and more fans singing along to hits “Soldiers” and their latest single “I Don’t Apologize (1000 Pictures)”. “Soldiers” was named Tunelab’s debut song of the year in 2012, and to add to their chart topping streak, the new single broke into top 20 in rock radio this past week and continues to work its way up with each show. The raw emotion and energy on stage sets Otherwise apart from many bands touring today; front man Adrian Patrick’s raspy vocals and clear love for the music kept the crowd moving throughout their set, with intense drum beats and striking guitar riffs getting everyone totally capture in the music.

The crowd was sufficiently warmed up on the brutally cold January evening, just in time for California rap-rock veterans Papa Roach to set the crowd into a rock filled frenzy. Opening with the debut single from 2012’s “The Connection”, “Still Swingin’”, the band instantly took off with their old school rap sound mixed with their new upbeat sing along choruses and energetic riffs from guitarist Jerry Horton. The fun continued with several other new songs before taking it back to the early 90’s with the fan favorite “Between Angels and Insects”, during which singer Jacoby Shaddix urged the crowd to go “mothef***in crazy”. They clearly needed no instructions, with a circle pit wide open in the center and countless bodies flying over the crowd towards the stage, many of which were greeted with a high five from Shaddix.

The band treated us to a number of new songs, performing them in the US for the first time since the album dropped due to Shaddix’ vocal surgery. To anyone oblivious to his recent voice struggles, they never would have known that he had any problems. The screams on old track “Dead Cell” were as raw as ever, and the melodic “Scars” and “Forever” were right on point. The small venue was a perfect setting for the guys, giving an intimate feel not found at festivals that makes their shows unbeatable. Their set came to a close with their biggest hit “Last Resort”, sending adrenaline coursing through the fans drained from the pit and causing a blur of moshing and jumping as everyone lost themselves in the music.

During a speedy set change fans quickly became antsy, eager to continue the night with some Stone Sour. The moment the bass started we were hit with a pounding in our chest and heavy drums from “Gone Sovereign”. In between almost every song fans chanted “Corey! Corey!” without fail, excited to front man Corey Taylor back on the stage with Stone Sour. His voice, almost a growl at times was even better live than recorded, emphasized by tracks such as “Absolute Zero” and “Mission Statement”.

The worn out crowd received a nice rest while Taylor performed a solo version of “Bother”, which included a surprise cover of Alice in Chain’s “Nutshell” in the middle. The much needed rest continued with “Through Glass”, undoubtedly one of the biggest hits the band has had to date, reaching both pop and rock radio across the country. Amazing instrumentals from guitarists James Root and Josh Rand and bassist Johny Chow combined with Taylor’s distinct voice and drummer Roy Mayorga’s incomparable drums made for a mind blowing set. The highly anticipated return of the band was certainly not a letdown. Following Mayorga’s stroke in 2011, the band stuck by him and waited for him to recover, finally hitting the road again with a fresh new album to promote, “House of Gold & Bones Parts 1 and 2”, as well as their drummer, an essential part of the band’s sound.
