Scranton’s Toyota Pavillion set up two stages side by side to kick the festival off. The instant one band finished their set, the next act was ready to rock, making for an exhausting and exciting day of non-stop music.
First up were Pennsylvania locals Candlelight Red. Following years of club shows in their home state, these guys got a chance to play for their long-time fans. If their performance in Scranton was anything like the rest of their shows, they will certainly be making a good impression across the country throughout the tour. Their set came from their debut EP Demons, as well as a rocked up cover of Roxette’s ‘Shes Got the Look’.
I was surprised when I heard that In This Moment would be playing Uproar. Their sound seems to fit better with Mayhem Festival, but they had a good following regardless. Their stage setup was disturbingly eerie, with a mic. stand of skulls, unusual outfits, and creepy makeup. Their unique stage setup added to the music and really made the set.
Ontario’s Redlight King switched up the rock festival once more with their rap-rock style. As fans began to swarm the stage they played their single ‘Comeback’ off of Marvel’s Avengers soundtrack. They continued with songs from their self titled debut album, including their latest single ‘Bullet in my Hand’, a track that had everyone singing along. The band had wide grins on their faces throughout the entire set. It was nice to see a band that genuinely loves going out on stages and giving it their all every day.
P.O.D closed out the side stages early in the evening. The grounds were finally packed full to hear 90′s favorite Youth of the Nation and the energetic rock anthem Boom. Countless people complained that they weren’t playing the main stage. Luckily for us though, the side stage meant nonstop crowd surfing and giant mosh pits before everyone had to head over to tame seats for the main stage.
To many people’s disappointment, Papa Roach were forced to pull off the rest of the tour due to singer Jacoby Shaddix vocal issues. To make up for losing one of the most entertaining bands on the tour, the main stage acts extended their sets. Despite missing Papa Roach while he recovers from surgery, the longer sets were a fair trade off.
Adelitas Way opened the pavilion stage with ‘The Collapse’ from their recent release Home School Valedictorian. They ran aroundthe stage energetically, hyping everyone up for the bands to follow. Singer Rick DeJesus asked fans throughout the set to “show him where we want him,” riling everyone up with the hope that he would jump into their side of the crowd. After finishing with their hit ‘Invincible’ DeJesus kept his promise by leaping of the stage and crowd surfing his way through the pit, high fiving everyone in sight.
No matter how many times I see Staind, I am always blown away. They can fill up their hour long set with their countless hits, including ‘Outside’, ‘So Far Away’, and their latest single ‘Not Again’. Their sound is far heavier live than recorded, with the pounding of the bass hitting everyone right in the chest. After years of touring Aaron Lewis and the rest of the band may look worse for wear, but if anything, their performance has only gotten better.
After an interview with Redlight King I had to run the long trek back to the main stage on time to catch Godsmack. I’d never seen them before and I wasn’t too sure what to expect. They didn’t need any flashy stage setup or gimmick to make the show. Their heavy rock and real talent was all that was needed. They opened with ‘The Enemy’ and ran through some more hits before slowing it down with an acoustic version of ‘Voodoo’.
Overall the lineup could not have gotten much better. Rockstar are going to have a tough time gathering a bigger lineup for 2013.
