Virginmarys Steal The Show In Allston

U.K. power trio The Virginmarys are on the verge of becoming the next big breakout rock act. Fresh off a well received performance at SXSW the band is currently opening for Michigan rockers IAmDynamite on tour. The tour rolled into Allston’s Great Scott on Monday night for some late night rocking. A small, rock themed bar room proved to be the ideal setting for a band playing straightforward, no frills, rock and roll.
With a sound that can best be described as somewhere between Kings of Leon and Deep Purple, The Virginmarys had the Allston crowd banging their heads and bouncing around all night. They hit the crowd with and 11 song assault including the slower, blues influenced “Bang Bang, Bang” the high octane thiller “Just A Ride” and their biggest hit to date “Dead Man’s Shoes’ to close the set. The Virginmarys stage energy was another point of focus, as they used every inch of the small space they had.
Drummer Danny Dolan was a maniac on the kit from start to finish, often standing up to get full force behind his big drum beats. After seeing them perform live, it’s evident to me that The Virginmarys are poised to become the next big thing in rock and roll, and it will be only a matter of time until you’re hearing their songs everywhere that you go.
Following the Virginmarys was the powerful duo IAmDynamite. A quite aptly named band, IAmDynamite kicked their set off with a bang. The Michigan based band played pretty quickly through their one and only album. Their sound packed a definite punch with some catchy choruses and strong hooks. Ultimately their set was a tad brief, but for the time they were on stage, they sounded great.
They also provided a great amount of playful banter with the audience as the night went on. Much of the crowd had left after The Virginmarys ended their set. But those who stuck around seemed to thoroughly enjoy IAmDynamite’s set. Both bands put together a great night of music in a city where rock music and DIY ethics are still alive and kicking.
