Pop Evil have been off the road for the past few months working hard on their third album, Onyx, due out on May 14. The guys are back and better than ever, currently on a short run with Three Days Grace before they head out on the summer festival circuit, hitting all of the major shows including Carolina Rebellion and Rock on the Range.
The band stepped on stage to be greeted by a packed full theater ready for a night of rock n' roll. They wasted no time launching into "Hero", continuing on with a number of tracks off of their debut album Lipstick on the Mirror. Frontman Leigh Kakaty's stage presence was captivating as he hooked the crowd from the first note, making sure old andnew fans made that night had the time of their life. Kakaty slowed things down for a few minutes, picking up an acoustic guitar for "100 in a 55", showcasing his wide vocal range.
Dedicated fans of the band were thrilled when the band began "Goodbye My Friend" from Onyx, finally hearing the new stuff live for the first time. Along with first single "Trenches" the new tracks are hard hitting, energetic, and pure rock. Drummer Josh "Chachi" Marunde had the crowd going from behind his kit, standing as he beat down on the drums, throwing his sticks in every imaginable direction with a crazed grin on his face that showed his love for the live show. The new songs had clear metal roots, influenced in part from the band's time on Five Finger Death Punch's Trespass America tour last summer.
The guys brought it back once more to play their hit "Boss's Daughter" from War of Angels, a rock anthem of summer 2012, and close their set up with "Monster You Made." The rock ballad had each and every cell phone in the place lit up, with the house lights dimmed down as far as they would go. With the entire audience singing and the glow of phones surrounding us it felt as though we were in a packed arena. Kakaty closed the night by thanking fans for keeping rock alive, leaving the hyped up audience to await headliners Three Days Grace.
Although we reviewed Three Days Grace at their show just this past weekend at XL102's Chili Cook-Off, I would like to wish guitarist Barry Stock a happy birthday, and just say once more: these guys are incredible. Getting a rare opportunity to enjoy the show without taking pictures or worry about a review was a nice treat, especially from one of the greatest bands in modern rock.
The band will be touring nonstop over the next few months hitting most of the major festivals with current vocalist Matt Walst. If you haven't yet had a chance to see the band with Matt, make sure you make it out to a show in your area!
