One of 2012’s biggest breakout rock acts has been the Grammy nominated band Halestorm. Their 2012 release “The Strange Case Of…” gained a great deal of success and notoriety for the band, climbing the charts and peaking at number 15 on the billboard 200 shortly after it’s release. The band, lead by the brother sister duo of Lizzy and Arejay Hale has been establishing themselves as one of rocks hottest up and coming acts over the last few years.
Friday night the band took time out from their headlining tour supported by In This Moment to play a free set at Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den. The line to gain entry had swelled to somewhere between 600 and 800 people seeking only 350 spots by the time doors opened. Many fans were left on the outside looking in by the time the band took the stage.
Opening with the crunch riffs of "Mz. Hyde," front woman Lizzy Hale had the crowd up and running within minutes. They continued the energetic pace that’s built their following over the last few years; the band hit the raucous crowd with the Grammy nominated song "Love Bites (So Do I)," followed by hard rock gems like "Freak Like Me" and "Dirty Work." Halestorm then paid tribute to one of their influences by breaking out a cover of Judas Priest’s "Dissident Aggressor."
That wasn’t the only cover Halestorm provided. Later they would bring out their rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s "Gold Dust Woman." Before closing the main set, drummer Arejay Hale impressed the audience with an energetic drum solo that showcased several types of playing, and even some humor when he broke out two over-sized drumsticks about the size of baseball bats. After playing their first hit single from 2009, "I Get Off," and closing the main set, the band returned for the slow paced drinking song "Here’s To Us" encouraging fans to raise a toast to the band. They ended the night with the hard rocking "Miss The Misery" which gave the audience one last shot at rocking out.
